Multiple studies are now linking high protein diets with increased mortality and cancer. In a study published in the December 2006 article of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lean people on a long-term, low-protein, low-calorie diet showed reduced risk of cancer, in particular, premenopausal breast cancer, prostate cancer and certain types of colon cancer. This was in comparison with people eating a typical Western diet including more protein and more calories. A second study published in the November 2006 issue of European Journal of Clinical Nutrition collected data on 22,944 healthy adults and found that eating diets high in protein and low in carbohydrates was associated with increased mortality. |
