Oh just great. The USDA has just approved the first non-prescription diet pill. /sigh As if that's what we really need: more pills promising weight relief. Sure, 50% of the patients experienced gastrointestinal problems including loose stools and oily spotting (and who wouldn't want some of that), but hey, that's a small price for weight loss (<cough> not counting the daily cost of the pill of course.) And never mind that Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, called the approval "the height of recklessness" saying that studies associated the prescription version of the drug with precancerous lesions of the colon. I'm curious. Given that even the FDA's director of nonprescription products, Dr. Charles Ganley said that "Using this drug alone is unlikey to be beneficial", stressing the need to take it conjuction with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise, what's going to happen when people fall off their diet as 95% of all dieters eventually do?
